It is difficult to think about the history of Great Britain without taking into account class and social status, and it is for these reasons that Queen Victoria established the Victoria Cross.

The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration in the UK and is awarded to members of the British Army, Commonwealth and British Empire. The award itself dates back to the Crimean War. It was during this conflict with Russia that war correspondent William Howard Russell described the bravery and valor shown by British soldiers of all ranks and classes.
Posthumous Awards
Seven civilians have been awarded venture capital: Thomas Cavanagh (1857); William Fraser McDonell (1857); Ross Louis Mangles of the Bengal Civil Service (1857); George Bell Chicken, civilian volunteer of the Indian Naval Brigade (1858); Rev. James Adams of the Bengal Church Department (1879) and Captains Frederick Parslow and Archibald Smith of the Merchant Navy (1915-1917).
The last two recipients were posthumously inducted into the Royal Naval Reserve to qualify them for venture capital. The Military Cross (MC) is awarded in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary bravery during active operations against the enemy on land to all members of the armed forces of any rank in Our Armed Forces."
Bars were given to MCs in recognition of further acts of bravery that merited the award, and bar recipients continue to use the post-name letters MC. When venture capital was first created, the original royal warrant did not mention posthumous awards.
It was agreed early on that venture capital should not be awarded for acts in which the potential recipient was killed or died shortly thereafter. Ribbons: Medals are worn on separate ribbons. They were originally made of silk, but during the nineteenth century cotton was increasingly used.

The document shown here was written by Lieutenant John Brophy, who received the Distinguished Service Medal for his actions as a color sergeant. in Inkerman (1854). He later unsuccessfully petitioned the Commander-in-Chief, the Duke of Cambridge, for a retrospective award of venture capital.

First Investiture
The VC ribbon was originally dark blue for the Royal Navy and crimson for the Army. Shortly before the Royal Air Force was formed in 1918, King George V approved the recommendation that the crimson ribbon be adopted by all three services.
