British Military Helmet

British Military Helmet

British Military Helmet - Cuirassiers were actually born from the men-at-arms of the late Middle Ages, who wore three-quarter armor for both the torso and legs. Helmets evolved from late-period lobster tail pots to a simpler harquebusier helmet. This is mainly due to cost, with the latter helmets costing less than half as much as heavier helmets.

Retail Price AU$140.32 AU$140.32 The British Military GS MK6 OD helmet was the standard for the British Armed Forces from the 1980's to 2005. Manufactured by NP Aerospace, it is designed to be worn with modern hearing protection, communications gear and a respirator.

This helmet pattern was modified in 1855 as the second "Albert" pattern and is notable for the change in color of the horse's feathers, in addition to some minor design changes.

Prior to this time all regiments wore black horsehair, but with the new regulations each of the seven regiments was given a unique color (which will see a slight change in overtime, especially when the units are eventually consolidated).

In Britain, the Dragoon Guards evolved from the Cuirassier in the 17th century. These men were fully covered in armor, but as the modern military developed, armor was lowered to create a more mobile fighting force.

Until the War of the Spanish Succession in the 18th century, the British army was essentially armorless, but armor was changed for some units during battle. , who are still famous today for their ceremonial duties, guarding the monarch and attending the daily changing of the guard. Although these regiments were not dragoons, they retained the look and dress of continental cuirassiers, complete with ceremonial breastplates.

They remain the oldest regiment in the British Army and have traditions dating back to 1660. The shell is in good condition, large, but the rubber/plastic liner retaining pins both broke while washing the helmet. The chin strap and strapping are both old and greasy, and the chin cup/sling material is shrinking and rotting.

The shipping has been described as the most celebratory occasion in the history of the colony. Support was not universal, however, and many viewed the proceedings with indifference or even hostility. The Nationalist Bulletin ridiculed the contingent before and after their return.

Assemblies aimed at establishing a patriot fund and supporting government action were poorly attended in many working-class suburbs, and many of those who came voted against the fund. There was a clear anti-war reaction in some centers of the country, while miners in rural areas reportedly put up "fierce resistance".

Over time, cuirassiers became simply breastplates and metal helmets. Sometimes different nations temporarily shed the armor, but most retained the metal helmets. Helmets changed dramatically during the Napoleonic Wars – and partly because Napoleon saw himself as the new Roman Emperor, he outfitted his cuirassiers and dragoons with helmets resembling a Roman-style helmet.

. This pattern evolved over time and, interestingly, was adopted by the Paris fire brigades and was in turn the inspiration for the Adrian pattern steel helmet used in World War I. The Seven Guards Dragoons and the 1st and 6th Regiments of Dragoons adopted a similar helmet pattern in 1847, which was bronze (or gilded).

For the Dragoon Guard officer, the insignia is a cut metal star in silver mounted on a brass shield. In the center is an oval of gilt brass surrounded by a garter bearing the regimental title and the royal monogram VR.

A curb chain of brass links completes the pattern and is fastened in brass rosettes to the side of the helmet. The NSW contingent anchored at Suakin, Sudan's Red Sea port, on 29 March 1885 and was attached to a brigade consisting of Scots, Grenadiers and Coldstream Guards.

Shortly after their arrival, they marched as part of a large square formation - this time consisting of 10,000 men - to Tamai, a village about 30 kilometers inland. Although the march was marked only by minor skirmishes, the men saw the reality of war as they paused among the dead of a battle that had taken place eleven days earlier.

More small skirmishes took place on the march the next day, but the Australians, now behind the square, suffered only three casualties, no fatalities. The infantry reached Tamai, burned all the standing huts and returned to Suakin.

The helmet pattern was last revised in 1871, and it is worth noting that while this version retains the basic shape of the earlier patterns, it lacks the nickname "Albert" as the prince consort died in 1861.

However, the early influence on household cavalry and dragoon helmets lives on to this day, with the 1871 pattern helmet still being used by heavy cavalry regiments. Dragon Guard / Dragoon helmets of other ranks have a plate with a simple white metal starburst ray with a garter in the center with the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" around it in brass and the regimental number in the centre.

Ask the average armchair historian when the modern steel military helmet was introduced and they will likely answer that it was World War I when the helmet returned to the battlefield. But that's actually the wrong answer because it's a trick question.

Despite the popular belief that armies did not use helmets in large numbers, the truth is that the metal helmet never really disappeared from the ranks of soldiers. At the outbreak of World War I, heavy cavalry troops were still wearing the uniforms worn a hundred years earlier during the Napoleonic era.

British Military Mkvi Ballistic Helmet [Genuine European Military Surplus]Source: www.venturesurplus.com

But today, while many countries have completely retired knightly helmets, these Roman styles live on with the Coraceros de la Guardia Real of the Spanish Royal Guard and the Italian Corazieri, the honor guard of the President of Italy.

Another pattern, the heavy cavalry helmet, is still used in Britain as the ceremonial headdress of household cavalry. The contingent arrived in Sydney on June 19. Expecting to reach Port Jackson, they were surprised to disembark at the quarantine station at North Head, near Manly, as a precaution against disease.

A man died there of typhus before the contingent left. Five days after arriving in Sydney, the contingent marched across the city in their khaki uniforms to a reception at Victoria Barracks, where they stood in the pouring rain as did a number of public figures, including the Governor, Lord Loftus, the Premier,

and the contingent commander, Colonel Richardson, made speeches. It was generally agreed at the time that Australia's contribution to the enterprise, however small the military significance, was an important step in the development of colonial self-reliance and a testament to the enduring relationship with Britain.

The helmets also disappeared over time, replaced by a tricorne hat and later a black leather peaked helmet. During the Napoleonic Wars, British heavy cavalry wore leather helmets with metal crests and crests, and later war helmets made the real charge.

In 1818 the British Dragoon Guards adopted a "Roman" style pointed helmet incorporating a metal skull with gold leaf decoration. The crests are edged with gilded copper trimmings, and the chin scales are decorated with large lion heads and are attached to the side of the helmet.

The first "Albert" helmet was in the form of the high leather spiked helmet adopted by Prussians and Russians at the same time. Instead of a metal spike, however, these helmets were decorated with a high plume in a brass plume holder and made of nickel silver with gold ornaments.

On the front of the helmet there is a left band of oak covering the front seam joint and on officer's helmets this includes an enameled plate while on other ranks it is a simpler silver plate.

a black fur comb or a metal pommel in the shape of a lion's forehead. This resulted in a unique helmet that entered service as the country transitioned into the Victorian era. With news of Gordon's death and the Canadian government's bid for troops in Sudan, the NSW government telegraphed London with an offer of its own.

To make his proposal more attractive, he offered to cover any costs. London accepted but noted that the contingent should be under British command. Similar offers from other Australian colonies were turned down. The UK Government's acceptance of the quota was enthusiastically received by the NSW Government and members of the armed forces.

It was considered a historic event as it was the first time soldiers hired by a self-governing Australian colony fought in an imperial war. After Tamai, most of the NSW contingent worked on the railway line that was laid across the desert to the inland Berber towns on the Nile, midway between Suakin and Khartoum.

Far from the excitement they had imagined, the Australians suffered most from the forced laziness of the guards. When a camel corps was formed, 50 men immediately volunteered. On May 6th they set out to reconnoiter Takdul, 28 kilometers from Suakin, expecting to encounter the Sudanese again, but the only action that day consisted of two newspaper letters accompanying the patrol before they left the camel drivers,

to tell Suakin their stories. They are soon surrounded by enemy forces and one is wounded while escaping. On May 15, the camel corps made another sortie to bury the bodies of the men who had fallen in action the previous March.

The notable exception is of course the British Army, where the Dragoons are divided into heavy and light cavalry regiments, with the Dragoon Guards and Dragoons taking on the former role, while the Light Dragoons serve as light cavalry.

Bounding Military

Bounding Military

Bounding Military - BAS can often get good coverage from a single location; however, sometimes sharing coverage suits mission needs. MEDO must analyze the available resources and limitations of each organization to make sharing successful and not risky. MEDOs have several options when considering how to lead medical teams in support of operations: extended coverage, limited coverage, and leapfrogging.

Organizations must accept the risks associated with the early use of this technology. If the battalion takes too long to advance the B Maintenance Team (MAS), they will leave the A Maintenance Team (FAS) exposed to casualties.

Bounding Military

Much of the delay in movement is due to the decision to hold Maintenance Unit B (MAS) physically with the Combat Trains Command Post (CTCP) and Unit Maintenance Collection Point (UMCP). Making BAS independent of CTCP requires MEDO to have more battlefield awareness.

Option Consolidated Bas Jumps

It also requires the medical team to rely on location and battlegrounds to ensure safety. (2)   Plan around an open space. Using movement azimuth, the leader determines the farthest assembly point, decides which side of the open area to move to (considering distance, terrain, and cover and concealment), and moves through the open area.

It uses tree lines and vegetation for cover and concealment. When a team or group reaches the assembly point on the far side, the leader adjusts himself by azimuth to the target area and continues the mission.

b. A binding object. Driving is inherently dangerous. Enemy weapons, unknown locations and other activities increase the risk. In driving, the team leader takes these things into consideration. The first confusion stems from the doctrine's inconsistent use of the terms FAS and MAS.

Although the terms FAS and MAS were common in the literature in the 1980s and 1990s, today's doctrine is unclear. The terms FAS and MAS still appear in ATP 3-21.21 (SBCT Infantry Battalion), but at no point do they appear in the new ATP 3-90.5 (Combined Arms Battalion).

Option Extended Medical Coverage

Additionally, ATP 3-21.20 and ATP3-21.21 refer to "Treatment Team Alpha" and "Treatment Team Bravo" respectively, in accordance with ATP 4-02.3 (Army Medical System Support for Maneuver Forces). Landmines are explosive devices designed to detonate when a pressure or detonator wire is triggered.

These devices are usually located on or below the Earth's surface. The purpose of the mines used by the army is to prevent any person or vehicle that collides with it due to the explosion or debris that comes out quickly.

in. Use the ground as cover. The land provides protection from sight and fire. Off-road tactics can help units use the terrain they are traveling on. Drivers should avoid "Cylinders". They must not move forward directly from the foul shot and must quickly cross open areas.

The idea is pretty basic. Basically, one part drives while the other part is fixed to the ground which can support the movement. This support will involve the use of fire (direct and indirect) against enemy forces that may affect the control unit.

-   Movement Formations

Once the core power finds a suitable location, it will stop and support the movement of the overwatch core. This process continues as the tactical situation requires. Basically, tactical command is how a unit puts its subordinates to negotiate on the ground to set the conditions for accomplishing its mission.

There are two basic differences between control availability and control technology. First, the driving style doesn't change much, while the driving technology is simpler. Second, the formation usually deploys its combat power in a high position where the commander believes he can contact the enemy.

Conversely, in tactical maneuvers you focus on making the least amount of contact with the enemy. This allows the commander to consider multiple options when facing the enemy. (1)   In planning and executing a movement, leaders must consider a number of factors.

The minimum requirements and other elements of METT-TC need to be adapted by the organization to the basic structure. Leaders must be prepared to adjust the distance of individual vehicles based on terrain, visibility and mission requirements.

Effective Medical Coverage Options

b. Avoid potential kill zones. Units should avoid large open areas surrounded by cover and concealment or areas covered by soil. They look for obstacles or other signs of a joint area. (1)   Availability of chart.

A unit uses a column when moving quickly, when moving through specific terrain on a specific route, or when not waiting for enemy contact. Each vehicle follows the vehicle directly in front. However, if the situation requires it, the vehicles can be pushed aside to improve safety.

This is sometimes called a constrained column. Figure 3-1 shows this type of page movement. Creating a chart has the following characteristics, advantages and limitations: In most cases it makes sense to skip the entire BAS as a single element.

Moving an efficient BAS is easy to configure. It also allows units to combine the effects of health resources available with each jump. The implementation of a strong BAS is ideal when the battalion is about to move into a non-contested area or where casualties are expected to be low.

Traveling Overwatch

While this technology provides ease of movement, it comes at the cost of responsiveness. (1)   The team leader informs all team leaders of the situation and identifies nearby and distant meeting points. It examines the danger zone and chooses a pass that offers the best protection and concealment.

According to the researchers, the GPR device directs radar energy underground and is only a few meters in front of the user. The device ignores the signals coming back from the surface and uses special software to make buried objects reflect the radar image.

GPR managed to locate two common minefields filled with a waxy substance similar to TNT. First, any of the control strategies above can be used in any of the systems we covered last month. Of course, many modifications are better suited to one technique than others.

For example, if you manage in the chart; you can use walking to facilitate each. Trained teams vary between processes and strategies during the process. These exchanges are of course dependent on METT-TC. in. Columns Column columns (Figure 3-1) are used when speed is critical, when the unit is moving through specific terrain along a specific route, and when the enemy is impenetrable.

Each subunit directly follows the previous one. If the situation requires it, the vehicles can break aside to improve safety. Charting has the following characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and limitations: c. The relationship between tactical movement and contact activities.

The purpose of tactical movement is to move units across the battlefield to prepare them for contact with the enemy. The method they use to develop from strategic movement to control, if not planned, is "work in interaction".

(See Chapter 4, Section IV.) The M14 was originally equipped with a U-shaped safety clip attached to the pressure plate. To fire the M14, the safety clip is removed and the pressure plate is rotated from its safety position to the cocked position.

The letters A (arms) and S (defense) are printed on the pressure plate. Soldiers just aim the arrow with A to arm. Advanced imaging techniques involve dividing the BAS into two halves to cover a large area.

M Pressure-Operated Blast Mine

Expanding the coverage area is useful when controls are spread out beyond what the BAS can support from a single location, or when terrain limits effective migration to a single location. Distributing BAS to cover long distances comes with a cost.

Each treatment group has half the resources of the BAS team and can provide additional coverage for a short period of time before mechanical or equipment problems limit capabilities. In addition to sharing resources, the team leader's ability to command and lead each team becomes more challenging.

To be successful, each management team must understand the strategic roles, communication and position of their team, and be empowered to make decisions when communication fails. Once started, any pressure of at least 19.8 pounds (9 kilograms) can cause the mine to explode.

When the right amount is applied, it presses on the Belleville drain under the pressure plate. This spring pushes the firing pin into the detonator, which ignites the Tetryl explosive charge. When soldiers don't have much time to clear mines, they often use other machines to roll and clear a safe path.

M Bounding/Fragmentation Mine

The military uses multiple explosive devices to detonate or detonate mines. Some machines are specially designed for detonating bombs, while tanks can be equipped with other detonating equipment. Security on the move includes anything that a group, vehicle crew, or group does to secure an area or larger force.

In a company, the command team is in the middle of the formation and the rest of the troops are behind the command team and around. The creation of a chainsaw has the following characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and limitations: Creation is an arrangement of objects, vehicles and soldiers in relation to each other.

The layout is not rigid and the distance between the vehicles, the shape and the speed of development are determined according to the METT-TC elements. Each vehicle in the inventory checks a designated area to ensure safety while moving.

-   Movement Techniques

Anti-tank types use the availability... So when will the unit share the BAS? During planning, the battalion medical officer (MEDO) must consider the possibility of BAS integration before committing to an area. Battalions must consider medical program standards to achieve adequate coverage.

Most importantly, the medical support program must fit the strategic plan. In addition, the introduction of the BAS should coordinate closely with the security of the BAS in order to use the force with the output resources.

Finally, the BAS location must consider the principles of mobility and flexibility as conditions inevitably change on the battlefield. This method of movement only increases the distance between objects. The extra space allows more room for maneuver and reduces the number of friendly troops, which in turn increases the security of the unit by making it harder to inflict serious damage on the enemy through surprise or ambush.

(2)   Nearest Meeting Place. The organization must use a mobile security system. The group may not clear the assembly area as an isolated line hazard area. Teams and individuals make a difference. Mines are placed in groups called minefields and are used to prevent the enemy from passing through an area, or in some cases to force the enemy through another area.

-   Movement Fundamentals

The army also uses landmines to slow down the enemy until they are rescued. Although there are more than 350 types of minerals, they can be divided into two groups: This is the cold stuff. I was looking for something like this.

As a combat veteran, detailed as a recruiter for the next 2.5 years, I have been looking for something short, concise and informative to help me stay relevant. (5)   To eliminate intervening gaps or dead spots, the border section may need to allocate a few teams or volunteers.

Although it usually forces the unit to take a tactical break, it reduces ground operations and losing vehicles and crew to hidden wreckage. Anti-personnel mines are specifically designed to guide or remove ground forces from a specific area.

These mines can kill or maim victims, and are activated by pressure, a trigger wire, or a remote detonation. There are also smart mines that turn off automatically after a while. These are the most common mines currently used by the US military.

Successive Bounding Overwatch

(2) Smoking. Schools, control battalions of grenade launchers, smoke canisters, and light smoke suppression systems (LVOSS) provide darkness to support the controlled antitank unit. Smoke prevents the enemy from tracking and attacking anti-tank units effectively. Another advantage is the TOW's thermal imaging ability to see and locate enemy targets while hiding through smoke.

A new thermal weapon sight for the MK19 and M2 makes these weapon systems effective when operating in smoke. Ohio State University researchers are developing a new GPR device that could be very effective in detecting and disarming mines.

This new device will help detect mines with little or no metal. All landmines, including plastic ones, are filled with explosives that are electronically detectable with the appropriate technology, such as GPR. Power Source At first glance, this may seem like a simple task.

After that, how hard is it to throw lead on the ground. However, there is much more to a successful fire pit building. First, you need to find a good place quickly to complete your work.

Obviously, time is important here. Every minute you spend defining the position is time that can be detrimental in allowing the boundary part to move to where they need to go. As we have discussed before, the field should allow to place fires where they are needed to support the exercise.

It should also provide cover, concealment and protection to the sources of fire.

British Military Headgear - An interesting aspect of the evolution of cavalry regiments is that Dragoons actually evolved to be part of the "light cavalry" in most European armies. The highlight was of course the British Army, where the Dragoons were divided into Heavy and Light Troops, with the Dragoon Guards and Dragoons fulfilling the former role, while the Light Dragoons served as Light Horse.

Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, changed the look of the Heavy Troops with the introduction of the "Albert" helmet in 1842. This nickel-plated helmet pattern was first adopted by the Household Cavalry, a unit that still has

These were the longest serving British soldiers and had a tradition dating back to 1660. Another aspect of the Dragoons was that while these soldiers were mounted, at first these men were not always cavalry. Originally, Dragoons were organized as mounted troops, which meant that while they were trained to ride, they also fought as foot soldiers, often riding into battle.

Another theory is that the Dragoons got their name from the type of firearms that these early soldiers carried. The weapon was called a "dragon," and in some languages—notably French, Portuguese, and Spanish—there is no difference between the words dodo and "dragon."

This helmet design was redesigned in 1855 as the second "Albert" model, and apart from some minor design changes, this one is notable for the change in the color of the horsehair. Before that time, all the regimes wore black horsehair, but with the new rules, each of the seven regimes got a different color (which will see a few adjustments during the schedule, especially during

In Britain, the Dragoons were descended from the Cuirassiers of the seventeenth century. These men were covered in armor, but as modern armies developed, armor was discarded to create greater mobility. By the Spanish Civil War in the eighteenth century, the British Army was almost completely armourless, but they reintroduced armor to some units during the conflict.

The helmet design was last changed in 1871, and it should be noted that while it still retains the original shape of the previous designs, this version lost the name "Albert", as the Prince Consort died in 1861. Despite

But today, while many nations have done away with cavalry helmets altogether, the Roman style lives on with the Coraceros de la Guardia Real of the Spanish Royal House and the Italian Corazieri, the bodyguard of the President of Italy.

And another model, the cavalry helmet is still used in Britain as the main theme of the Home Army ceremony. The first "Albert" helmet took the long form of the leather pickelhaube (spiked helmets) adopted by the Prussians and the Russians at the same time.

Instead of stainless steel, however, these helmets were decorated with a long handle on bronze and were made of German silver with trim. On the front of the helmet there is a band on the left side of the oak which covers the joint of the front shirt, and for officers' helmets this includes an enamel plate, while for other ranks it is a silver plate.

The Seventh Dragoons, and the 1st and 6th Dragoon Regiments, adopted a similar helmet in 1847 which was made of bronze (or gilt). For Dragoon Guards, the insignia is a silver-cut metal star mounted on a brass shield.

Sometimes different peoples abandoned their weapons for a while, but most of them kept iron helmets. During the Napoleonic Wars, the helmet evolved greatly - and partly because Napoleon saw himself as the new Emperor of Rome, he equipped his Cuirassiers and Dragoons with helmets that resembled Roman-style helmets.

This model evolved over time and was admired by the Paris Fire Brigade and became the inspiration for Adrian's steel helmet model used in the First World War. Ask the average armchair historian when the modern steel military helmet was introduced and they will probably answer that World War I was when the helmet returned to the battlefield.

But that's actually the wrong answer because it's a trick question. Despite the belief that the great soldiers do not use helmets, but the truth is that the steel helmet has never disappeared from the army.

British Military Cross

British Military Cross - All content is available under the Open Government License v3.0 unless otherwise noted. It is difficult to think about the history of Great Britain without taking into account class and social status, and it is for these reasons that Queen Victoria established the Victoria Cross.

Introduced in 1856 to reward gallantry in the face of the enemy, the medal has been awarded 1,358 times to 1,353 individual recipients, and only 14 medals have been awarded since the end of World War II.

The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration in the UK and is awarded to members of the British Army, Commonwealth and British Empire. The award itself dates back to the Crimean War. It was during this conflict with Russia that war correspondent William Howard Russell described the bravery and valor shown by British soldiers of all ranks and classes.

Posthumous Awards

Seven civilians have been awarded venture capital: Thomas Cavanagh (1857); William Fraser McDonell (1857); Ross Louis Mangles of the Bengal Civil Service (1857); George Bell Chicken, civilian volunteer of the Indian Naval Brigade (1858); Rev. James Adams of the Bengal Church Department (1879) and Captains Frederick Parslow and Archibald Smith of the Merchant Navy (1915-1917).

The last two recipients were posthumously inducted into the Royal Naval Reserve to qualify them for venture capital. The Military Cross (MC) is awarded in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary bravery during active operations against the enemy on land to all members of the armed forces of any rank in Our Armed Forces."

Bars were given to MCs in recognition of further acts of bravery that merited the award, and bar recipients continue to use the post-name letters MC. When venture capital was first created, the original royal warrant did not mention posthumous awards.

It was agreed early on that venture capital should not be awarded for acts in which the potential recipient was killed or died shortly thereafter. Ribbons: Medals are worn on separate ribbons. They were originally made of silk, but during the nineteenth century cotton was increasingly used.

However, unlike the Congressional Medal of Honor, there is no law against the sale of your award. Unfortunately, many veterans have been forced to sell their venture capitalists to make ends meet after retirement. The Queen chose to remain mounted throughout the ceremony and apparently stabbed one of the recipients, Commander Henry Raby RN, in the chest as she pinned the cross to his uniform.

Yet Commander Raby stood motionless as the pin sank into his flesh! However, King George V firmly believed that the decoration should never be lost. Prior to the establishment of the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in June 1918, many officers of appropriate rank in the air service were also awarded the Military Cross in recognition of their daring feats in the air.

Major Arthur Martin-Lick received venture capital while serving as a surgeon with the South African Police during the Boer War on 8 February 1902 at Vlakfontein. For bravery in the period from October 29 to November 8, 1914, near Zonnebeke on the Western Front, he received the Plan to the Cross.

The metal from which the real awards are made is obtained from the weapon metal of two guns captured by the Russian army during the siege of Sevastopol. Some historians dispute this fact and offer an alternative theory that some VCs are made from Chinese weapon metal rather than Russian.

There is also another theory that the metal of some of the vintage World War II venture capitalists could have come from a different source. In any case, the spirit of the medal is more important than the metal.

Various venture capital guarantees also gave the sovereign the power to reverse any forfeiture and restore both the award and the pension. Thus, eight cases of confiscation are still included in the official list of venture capital holders of the War Department.

Since its founding in 1856, 1,358 venture capitalists have been awarded. This amount includes the three stripes awarded to the soldiers who won the second venture capital and the Cross awarded to the Unknown American Soldier.

The Victoria Cross

During World War I (1914-1918), 626 venture capitalists were awarded, and in World War II (1939-45), 181 were awarded. Between 1899 and 1902, the British Army waged a bitter colonial war against the Boers in South Africa.

After initial setbacks and a long period of guerrilla warfare, the British eventually prevailed, but not without the use of controversial tactics. The Military Cross of Great Britain (MC) was established on 28 December 1914 for commissions at the rank of captain or below and for warrant officers.

It was established shortly after the start of the Great Patriotic War of 1914-1918, when there were no other awards for valor, except for the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Service Order, for junior army officers and ensigns.

Since 1911, 29 soldiers from the Indian subcontinent have been awarded the Order of the VC. The first recipient was Subadar Khudadad Khan of the 10th Baloch Regiment who received the Cross on 31 October 1914 at Hollebaek, Belgium when he continued to fire his machine gun until every other soldier in his squad was killed.
